Game centers take business to next level - East Bay Business Times:

wanuso.wordpress.com
The 46-year-old Fremont engineer, a 20-year veteraj of the semiconductor industry, is the first of a relatively new As the operator of Rivalution in Pleasanton, MacPherson is one of the first to test the franchis e concept in the nascent, highly fragmented gaminvg center industry. Such gaming centers have been long been popular in Asian countries such as Koreaand Singapore. In the Unitedx States, the number of such businesses, whicy allow customers to rent high-end PC terminals with blazing fast network connections bythe hour, have been doublinbg each year for the past threr years, according to San Francisco-base iGames, an association for gaming The group estimates that theres may be close to 1,000 such U.
S. centers. More than a dozeb gaming centers operate in theBay Area. The centersw are typically hubs for PC gaming enthusiasts playing popular titlezs suchas "Medal of Honor," "Halo," "Counter-Strike" and "When I first started checking this out, one employew thought I was pickinv up my kid," MacPherson said. "I'm certainly of a differeny generation, but I bring some stuff to the tablew inthis business." MacPherson is not without his youthu connection.
The company was started by Will Huyngh andThuan Lee, two twenty-somethings who opened the first Rivalution center in the neighborhood of thei r old high school in East San Jose in Marchy 2001. The following year, the two opened anothefr center in SouthSan Jose. Huynj and Lee say the success of thoser two centers spurred them to take their business modelp to thefranchise level. As such, they coule take advantage of what the first two yearas taught them about running such a business and spread that toothetr entrepreneurs. "A lot of people start up theser places because they want to be in business for but there's a learning Huynh said.
"There's a lot we can offefr them, so it's a win-win situation." The compant opened its first franchise location in Redondo Beach in Southern Californialast March. In MacPherson opened the secondRivalution franchise, or what the company callxs Rival 4, in Pleasanto near Stoneridge Shopping Center. A fifth franchise openedf in Milpitaslast month, and anothet is slated to open in Salt Lake City on Feb. 21. Rivalutiom is not alone in testing the franchise Last year, GameWyze of Dallas and GameStatew Entertainment of Vancouver, British Columbia, launched franchise plans.
Others are moving in the same direction, and some worr the trend may bringb in people without a grasp on how to run such a Kevin Kordes, co-owner of Fusion Net Cente in Pleasanton, is planning to launcgh a franchise program later this year but cautionss that there's more to running a successful gamin center than simply getting the right computerz and Internet connections. "This business is so sporadic andfast nothing's stable at this point," Kordess said. "There's a specificv formula you haveto follow. It just doesn'tg happen.
It all comee down to how you retainyour Specifically, gaming centers are less about the hardwar e and more about the community they Kordes says. Most gamers have their own equipment at home but welcomes a chance to get aroundother gamers, play each othed and share strategies. Gaming tournaments are also a big both host tournaments and teams for games suchas "Medalo of Honor" and "Counter-Strike," among others.
Mark Nielsen, executiv director of iGames, said many gaming centers are seeing theirf businesses stabilize and learning about how to grow But the secretto success, accordintg to Nielsen, is a location that offers the righr mix of young people with disposable incomes. Both Rivalutio n and Fusion Net Center are locatednear Pleasanton's two high giving them easy access to the important after-schookl crowd. "The biggest thing I'km concerned about - from a franchise pointg of view - is that the core ingredient is not your paintr job or how nice thecomputerse are. It's all about the community," Nielsen said.
"Yoi can't go around and set up centers just becausd onedoes well."

The dual failures of Villa Rica-based a and Newnan-base d (full stories on the failures, click and ) are a first in the on-going banking crisis, and a departurse from the FDIC’s early strategy in this “They’re ramping up a little bit,” said Chip Atlanta-based banking attorney. “With their efforts to staf up, raise money for the deposit insurance fund throughh the special assessments andthe Treasury, I expect they’l try to resolve these faster throughout the remainder of the The national deposit insurer, which backstops accounts to avoid customer pulling their money from a bank and hastening its previously avoided seizing two banks in the same metro area during this The reason, industry insiders said, was to avoicd the perception one geographic area was weaker than otheras in the country.
Yet as the financiakl condition of Georgia banks continueto weaken, industry analystss and experts said the velocity of Georgia’s bank failures woulde continue, if not accelerate. As of first quarter 2009, the ratio of problem loanz to total loans at stat e banks reached a new highof 7.4 percent; nearlu double the peak the state reported during the Savings & Loan Crisis of the late 1980’es and early 1990’s. The ratiio compares past due anddelinquentf loans, along with foreclosed real estate repossesseed by the bank, to total loansd outstanding.
The state has set new highs for that figure in each quarter dating back to the summe rof 2007, when the credit crunch and financial crisis begah in earnest. One industry attorney, who declined to be said the failures, and the acceleration, represeny the worst banking crisis inGeorgiwa history. The industry term of “Failur e Fridays” — or the most commoh day when federal and state regulators seizs failedbanks — insiders said, will become ubiquitous for some “This is a perpetuatiojn of what we’ve been talkin g about for a while now,” said Briajn Olasov, an Atlanta-based managing directore at LLP, who noted Georgia bankas have an imbalance between fewer customer, or deposits and more outstanding loans.
“Thes numbers indicate Georgia banks got way out overtheie skis. This was a great place to lend in the butnow they’re paying the price,” Olasov said. president Joe Brannen said the seizures are a difficult part of the naturaeconomic cycle. “Bankers and regulatorse make tremendous efforts to keep institutions but in someunfortunate cases, these actions are part of the necessaryu healing process for our bankinyg system to ensure overall stability,” Brannen said.
Georgia’s failure woes began in earnest inAugust 2008, when Alpharetta-based , once the state’ds fastest growing bank, , concentrated amongs a small group of Ever since, the failures have followee an increasingly familiar formula. Delinquent real estate coupled with high levels of forecloserdreal estate, equals failure. The pattern includesd a high number onthe so-callesd Texas Ratio, an industry metric createdf in the 1980’s to measure the health of lenders throughout Texas. The ratio measures total problem loans to totapequity capital, and is designed to providee a rough measure of bank’s problems to its abilitg to absorb them through existing capital.
In the 100 percent indicates problems are larger than availablewequity capital. In Georgia, most of the bank failureds have reported a Texas Ratio in exces s of 300 percent at the timeof seizure. As of firstt quarter 2009, 92 Georgia banksd reported a Texas Ratio higher than the statewide average of58 percent. In Atlanta, bankds reported an average Texas Ratio of72 percent, nearluy 20 points higher than the statewides figure. Each of the 11 bankas with the highest Texas Ratios were basesd inmetro Atlanta. Since March 31, the end of first three of those banks havebeen seized.

Nearly one-third of Tenderloin residents surveyee reported that it was difficult for them to get to agrocery store, and more than half obtain food from soup kitchen or food pantries. Wonder Bread plant

esivyjifag.wordpress.com
But the lack of progress at anothert industrial redevelopment site across North Fourthg Street and the poor economic climatee could limit interest inthe 64,400-square-foot building, real estate experts Kansas City, Mo.-based closed the plant at 697 N. Fourth St. on May 6 as it shifted productionb to other WonderBread bakeries. That decision, which eliminated nearlyg 90 jobs and ended the smellof fresh-baked bread that once wafted from the plant, followeds a four-year reorganization of the company in . Interstates put the property on the markeytfor $1.7 million.
“Yoh have a landmark building withthe intrinsic, cool elements of the the beams and the clear said Peter Merkle, the agent marketing the property. “Ig may take time for someone to figurreit out, but I think there’s a deal The Wonder Bread plant becomes the latest industriak operation in Italian Village in searcy of a new future. The commission has yet to receive word on what couled happen to the WondedrBread plant, visible from Interstate 670. The Hagerling said, should lend itself to renovation into residentiak oranother less-intensive commercial use. “We will certainly be watching it,” he said.
“I think we’d like someone to come in and propose a reuse for the building as opposed to tearing it down and redeveloping the site Merkle saidthe property’sw age makes it an unlikelu location for another production facility. But it coulfd serve as offices or perhaps loft studio and residentiall spacefor artists, he “The building’s probably functionally obsolete for a manufacturing user,” he “but there’s an unlimited market.

The politics of the Sotomayor nomination - The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area:

tarpleypymibujuh1491.blogspot.com
First, the likelihood of her being confirmed isextraordinarilu high, barring some revelation that has not managed to surfacde over her long and distinguished Second, despite these odds, the likelihoodx of highly mobilized opposition to her nominatiohn is also extraordinarily Politics is driving both of these likely outcomes. Beyond her impressive educational and professional Judge Sotomayor is likely to be confirmed because of significanrt political factors inher favor. Even without the Minnesotz seat stillin dispute, the nomination startsx with 59 likely Democratic votes.
It takees only one more to geta filibuster-proof and given that seven current Republicanm Senators voted for her when she was confirmef to the Second Circuif in 1998, it seems likely that she can win the supportr of at least one of them. Two of thosee senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collinasof Maine, are among the “endangered species” of New Englanx Republicans. Maine has voted Democratic in presidential electionzs since 1992 and last year Obama won the state by 18 There is also serious disagreement within the Republican partu over how to and whether to go afte aLatina nominee. The party has already lost a significant numbert of Latino andfemale voters.
In Obama won 67 percentr of the Latino assuring his victory in severalswing states, and women favoresd Obama over McCain 56 percent to 43 percent. A nasty confirmation fight will only further alienate theses influential groupsof voters. Nonetheless, there will be a well-organizefd effort to block her nomination. That effortg was already under way before Obamanominaterd Sotomayor. The last few decades have been characterized by an ongoing political struggle between the two parties over controlo of thefederal judiciary. Experts disagree over when thenastinesz began, but over the last 40 yeares political forces have aligned to increase the levelk of conflict over federal judicial nominees.
Observers point to importany developments in American politics that best explainn the current politics ofjudiciap nomination: the lack of a clear majority leading to closely contested elections and a polarizecd Congress; the recognition by the parties and interestt groups that some of their supporters cares a great deal about issues that would be decideed by the Court and that they coulcd be mobilized around those issues; and the recognition by presidentsz that they could extend their legacy beyond their tenure through the lifetime appointments of judges who shared theid ideology.
Interest groups and parties will send letteresand e-mails to their base, encouraging them to believe the worsft about either the nominee or her and asking for money in orde r to fight the fight. Leaders of theser groups will have ample opportunities to appeaeras “talking heads” on cable shou t fests. Senators will make televised speechese about why they support or opposethe nominee. All of thesee groups’ political interests will be served even if the nomineeis confirmed. It really is barelu about her at all. So hold on to your hats (and your and get ready for the show.

Second recession deemed possible - Business First of Columbus:

badillodacyroic1505.blogspot.com
Those odds may seem low, but they’re actuallt high since double-dip recessions are rare and the U.S. economt grows 95 percent of the time, says the chamber’s Martyy Regalia. He predicts the current economic downturn will endaroundr September. However, the unemployment rate will remainj high through the first half of next year andinvestment won’t snap back as quickly as it usually does after a recession, Regalia Inflation, however, looms as a potential problejm because of the federal government’s huge budget deficite and the massive amount of dollara pumped into the economy by the Federapl Reserve, he says.
“Thes economy has got to be runninb on its own by the middld ofnext year,” Regalia says. Almosr every major inflationary periodin U.S. history was precede d by heavydebt levels, he notes. The chancexs of a double-dip recession will be lower if Ben Bernanke is reappointe d chairman of theFederal Reserve, Regalia If President Barack Obama appoints his economic adviser Larr y Summers to chair the Fed, that would signa l the monetary spigot would remain open for a longet time, he predicts. A coalescing of the Fed and the Obamas administrationis “not something the markets want to see,” Regaliaa says.
Obama has declined to say whethe he willreappoint Bernanke, whose term ends in February.

To boost sales, check your optimism level - The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area:

ovaluleq.wordpress.com
Here’s a thought: Take a look at a soft emotiona l intelligence skill that yields hardsales results, optimism. There is evidencse that supports the theory that salee teams possessing high levels of optimism make companiesamore money. One of the best case studiexs comes from the work that psychologist Martin Seligman did with Metropolitan Life in New He convinced Met Life to give him access to thei r new employees and administer the usual as well as a new test he developef thatmeasured optimism. He followed the progress of new salespeopld for one year and found that salespeople who scoreds high in optimism sold 33 percent more insurance than thoswe whoscored low.
Aftee two years, the optimisti group of salespeople were thriving intheir positions, whicgh increased retention and decreasefd the costs associated with turnover and increased sales. How optimistic is your organization ? There is a lot of press on theswine flu, and peoplw are worried about catching it. There is another epidemic to watchg out forin today’s economy: pessimism. It can be deadlu when it hits an organization because emotionare contagious. The clinical term is emotional contagion and is definedas “the transmission of moods.” When people are in a certaij mood — happy or depressed — that mood is ofte communicated to others.
What is the mood at your company A sales manager shares the storu of a rep who started every conversationb in the lastdownturn with, “You probablh don’t have any money so you don’gt want to buy …” The self-fulfillingy prophecy was set by the salesperson, and the prospecrt followed the salesperson’s lead. No deal. So what can you do to stop the epidemivcof pessimism? Study and duplicate optimistic salespeople. When facede with adversity, optimistic salespeople ask themselves: • What’s good about this? They know that adversityy is where true character is formed and great lessonwsare taught.
Optimists take advantagee of this schooling because they know that lessones learned today make money inthe future. What can I do about this situation ? Optimists know that control equals action yields results and resultsincrease • What is funny about this ? Humor is a great way to relievse stress, which frees up the mind for creativity and Optimistic salespeople take control. They know sales is the greatest profession to be in during a They can meet with mentors who can help them look at anothef way of doing businesa intough times. They can outwork their competitors. They can investt in learning and outsmarttheier competitor.
